Description

Alpha 2 Antiplasmin is a member of the serpin family of serine protease inhibitors and is found in plasma at about 70 µg/ml. It efficiently inhibits the plasminogen-activator-induced lysis of fibrin clots. Consequently, A2AP has a major role in regulating the Coagulation Cascade. Mutations in A2AP result in Alpha 2 Antiplasmin Deficiency, a rare coagulation disorder characterized by unrestrained fibrinolytic activity and severe hemorrhagic diathesis. Individuals with this condition may receive therapeutic A2AP prior to surgery to prevent postoperative hemorrhaging
